翻訳コラム

いつもブログで紹介しているJ-PlatPat(特許庁、独立行政法人工業所有権情報・研修館)にはEnglish Pageがあり(https://www.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/web/all/top/BTmTopEnglishPage)、ここには明細書やクレームの英訳が掲載されています。

この英訳は機械翻訳ですが、その精度の良さは、翻訳者や特許実務者の間で評判です。多くの翻訳会社や企業が、J-PlatPatのEnglish page掲載の英訳を参考資料として添付するようになりました。

たとえば、特開2002-235107号のクレームの英訳を以下に示します。
このような高精度の翻訳では、我々翻訳者の翻訳の仕事は奪われてしまうのでしょうか。
特に感動した点は、

1. 「記録可能な」を"allows recording"と訳している点です。
2. 「一部始終」を"thorough"と訳している点です。

しかし翻訳者も翻訳メモリを使って用語を置き換えているのが現状ですから、 我々翻訳者も機械翻訳に頼っているのです。
今後は、機械翻訳を良質な翻訳文に成形する「翻訳者」の存在が必要になるでしょう。

The excellent quality of the machine translations on this website is popular among translators and patent practitioners.
Many translation agencies and companies have attached translations from J-PlatPat's English website as referential materials.

For example, the translation of an abstract from Japanese Patent Application No. 2002-235107 on J-PlatPat's English website is shown below. I wonder if such high-precision translation will eventually deprive translators of work?
I was especially moved by the following two translations:

1. “can record" (記録できる) is translated to “allows recording";
2. “from beginning to end" (一部始終) is translated to “thorough".

Actually, however, our translation works rely on converting source languages into foreign languages using translation memories. This means that we as translators also rely on machine translations.
I expect that translators who can form machine translations into high-quality translations will be needed more and more.
