翻訳コラム

6月29日(土)〜7月1日(日)にI-JET29 大阪が開催されました。私は「特許翻訳に必要な検索ツール」を講演しました。
世界中の翻訳者、通訳者が集まり、多くのセッションが行われました。
「言葉に命を吹き込む」というテーマにふさわしく、時代との影響もあいまってAI関連のスピーチが多くなされました。
会議に出席して痛感したのは、特許翻訳者は日本全国に存在しており、また国内外に外国人の特許翻訳者が存在しているという点です。外国人は日本を愛して、日英の特許翻訳を行い、日本の会議に出席してくれました。
ネイティブによる特許翻訳を日本人本翻訳者は超えることができない、と思ってしまいますが、日本語の独自のニュアンスを読み取り、訳文に反映し、外国人翻訳者は母国語のニュアンスを読み取り、伝えていく、というのがそれぞれの役割だと思います。
翻訳作業を効率化され、AIが浸透しても、訳文仕上げの最終段階で「言葉に命を吹き込む」ことが翻訳者の役割であると痛感しました。専門家の知的作業はAIにとって代わられるといわれていますが、ことばを扱う翻訳者の仕事は完全にはとって代わられないと信じています。

I-JET 29 Osaka (JAT) was held from Saturday, June 29th, to Sunday, July 1st. I gave a presentation entitled “Tools necessary for patent translation".
Translators and interpreters from around the world gathered to engage in a variety of discussions and meetings.
True to the event's theme of “breathing life into words", there were many AI-related speeches about the influences of the AI age.
After attending the event, I fully realized that not only are Japanese patent translators located across Japan but foreign patent translators exist around the globe as well. These translators love Japan and translate from Japanese to English; many of them participated in this conference in Japan.
As Japanese translators, we cannot translate into English as accurately as native translators; but what we can do is read the nuances of Japanese text and ensure that the translation reflects them, just as foreign translators can do in their mother tongue.
I keenly felt that—even if translation work becomes streamlined and AI-related translation becomes the norm—at the end of the day, “breathing life into words" is the translator's role. Experts' intellectual works may be replaced by AI, but I believe that translators who handle words will not be replaced.
