翻訳コラム

10月24日〜29日にATA Annual Conference (American Translators Association)がNew Orleans Marriott Hotelで開催され、出席しました。世界の中から1000人以上の翻訳者、通訳者が参加し、数多くのセッション、job fair, dictionary fair,ダンスパーティーなどが開かれました。
日本語部門に関しては、在米で日英の通訳、翻訳を行っている方々(日本人、外国人問わず)がほとんどであり、アメリカにおける日本語の翻訳の需要が多いことがわかりました。
特許翻訳のセッションに参加しましたが、世界中の受講者対象であるにもかかわらず、日本語がトピックの一つとして取り上げられました。英文明細書を和訳する場合、原文に反して改行してはならないなどの厳格なルールがあることがわかりました。

濃い内容が詰まったセッションが多く、あっという間に4日間が過ぎてしまいましたが、ここで得た財産は知識もさることながら、世界中の翻訳者、通訳者とのコミュニケーション、友情でした。

I participated in the ATA Annual Conference, which was held from October 24 to 29 in New Orleans at the New Orleans Marriott Hotel. More than 1,000 interpreters and translators attended from all over the world. We had many sessions, a job fair, a dictionary fair, a dance party, and more.
The Japanese language department primarily consisted of Japanese and foreign interpreters/translators living in the US, which means that there is a high demand for Japanese translations in the US.
I took part in a session focusing on patent translation in which, despite the session being intended for overseas participants, the Japanese language was picked up as one of the topics. The session discussed various strict rules, such as the prohibition of starting a new line that does not match the original text.
In a book translation session, the presenters introduced a website for connecting authors, publishers, and translators:

This conference was incredibly significant, and the four days passed very quickly. The assets I gained here were not only knowledge-based but also steeped in communication and friendship with Japanese and overseas translators/interpreters.
