最近、翻訳者との集まりで話題になるには、AI(Artificial Intelligence)による翻訳業界への影響です。

Recently, we translators have been talking often about the influence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) on the translation industry. Many of my colleagues say that checking and proofreading translations has become a significant part of their routine work. But who’s doing that translations?
Well, that would be machines. I am relieved, however, to hear that these translations were not completely made by machines from start to finish but rather were made by machines based on accumulated human translations.
That said, I am afraid that in the near future translations will be performed completely by machines.
Nevertheless, such translations need to be given a finishing touch by a human editor, which means that human translators will still be around; but, this will ultimately decrease translation fees. Checking and proofreading fees, for example, can go for as low as 20% of regular translation fees.
Fortunately, patent attorneys have not been negatively influenced by AI so far becausedrafting specifications using AI is still quite difficult.
Hearing about inventions from customers, conducting prior searches, drafting specifications and claims—these tasks are ordinarily conducted through close contact with customers.
Interviewing customers several times and completing patent documents is not something that AI can do very easily.
Especially in the Japanese translation industry, customers rarely entrust individual translators with translations; rather, they go through translation companies and entrust the translation to translators with whom they have not been acquainted.
As customers do not typically know the capabilities of individual translators, those translators’ jobs can be easily replaced by AI. In effect, we translators do not work through communication with customers, and so we could also be considered so-called translation machines.
Thus, AI can easily replace us translators. I wonder if the influence of AI on the translation industry is caused by the nature of the industry itself?
