At last, an incident which I have been fearing happened.
A trademark application for “CORONAVIRUS” was filed with the JPO (Japanese Trademark Application No. 2020-18172) on February 20, when coronavirus infections had already been widely reported in Japan.
Who is the applicant?
Mr. Ikuhiro Ueda in Osaka.

There are too many goods and services designated in the application for CORONAVIRUS to list them all here. They include:

Telecommunication machines and apparatus, measuring or testing machines and instruments, electronic publications, and many other goods (class 9);
Printed matter, stationery and study materials, and other goods (class 16);
Advertising, retail or wholesale services for electrical machinery or telecommunication machines, and many other services (class 35).

I presume the following about the goal of the trademark application that was filed, based on the aforementioned three classes. The applicant wants to register a trademark for CORONAVIRUS for books (paper books or electronic books). However, while titles of magazines can be registered as trademarks, titles of book are not permitted for registration as trademarks because they indicate the contents of the book. The applicant also wants to obtain a trademark for CORONAVIRUS as a name, for example, for measurement machines.

However, the word coronavirus, referring to the disease which has become a global issue, will likely be refused because trademark registration for the word is against public order and good morals. If the trademark is registered, it will prevent others from using the word in names of various products and services. I presume that a reason why drugs are not designated as goods is that a trademark for such a word would be rejected because the name indicates the effect of the drug.
