スタジオジブリが「千と千尋の神隠し」など8作品の場面写真(計400枚)を無料で提供することを発表したニュースをこのブログで伝えました。
最近、Twitterでこの場面写真を見かけるようになりました。今までは著作権がこわくて使えなかったこのすばらしい作品を無料で使えるのはとてもありがたいことです。これらの写真は投稿を引き立たせてくれます。

なぜジブリは無料提供してくれたのか?疑問に思う人は多いでしょう。私はコロナ禍で人々が映画館で作品に触れる機会が減ったことが原因であると思っていました。

根底には作品が消える危機感があるそうです。
クリエーターにとって作品が忘れられることは恐怖です。
書籍も絶版になれば消えてしまいます。現在では電子書籍に転換するという方法がありますが、電子書籍にも著作権があります。
人々が著作物を自由に使えないのは、紙の本であろうが、電子書籍であろうが、これらが有償無償であろうが、著作権があるからです。
著作物を無償提供にすることが、最も人々から忘れられることを防ぐ方法です。無償でも許諾が必要であれば、自由に使えず、忘れられる原因になります。
著作物でお金を稼ぐより自分を知らしめたいと考える人は、無償公開が最適な方法です。

I informed you in this blog that Studio Ghibli have announced that they will provide still images from eight of their works like Spirited Away (400 photos in total) for free.
Recently I have been seeing these still images used in other people’s Twitter posts. It is wonderful for us to be able to use these extraordinary photos, which we previously refrained from using in fear of infringing copyrights.
These images can make our posts attractive.

Many people wonder why Studio Ghibli is providing these images for free. I assume that a decrease in our chances of coming into contact with cinematic works due to the COVID-19 pandemic is what has encouraged Studio Ghibli to provide their images for free.

This article states that providing these images was encouraged by a fear that their works will disappear.
Creators fear that their works will be forgotten.
Books that are out of print will disappear. Recently, creators can convert physical books to e-books, however these are also protected by copyrights.
The reason why we cannot use other people’s works without permission is that these works are protected by copyright, irrespective of whether they are physical books or e-books, or whether they are sold or available for free.
The best way to prevent people from forgetting creators’ works is to provide these works for free.
Works that are provided for free but require permission for their use may be forgotten because people cannot use them freely.
Creators who want to allow these works to become well-known rather than making a profit can use the optimal method of free publication.
