来年開学される「大阪公立大学」の英語表記がOsaka Metropolitan Universityに決定されました。これは、University of Osakaから変更されたものです。

英語表記を変更したのは、大阪大学の英語表記と混乱を招くという理由でUniversity of Osakaの名称を再考するように大阪大学から求められていたからです。
大阪大学の英語表記は正式には、Osaka Universityですが、論文などにUniversity of Osakaと表記されることもあり、混乱を招くとの懸念がありました。

私も翻訳する際に会社の英語表記を調べることが多いのですが、ウエブサイトを見ても英語表記が掲載されていないことがあります。この場合、英語表記を創造して訳さざるを得ません。

大学は論文に英語表記を記載するので、予めこれを明確に決めておくこと、そして他大学と混乱を招く英語表記を回避することは求められるのでしょう。

しかし、懸念されるのは、第三者が大学の英語表記を使用する場合、きちんと決められたものを使用するか否かです。たとえ大学の英語表記を商標登録しても、一般的に名称として使用する場合には、商標権は及びません。

英語表記の周知徹底を図る必要があります。そして翻訳者を含め、一般人も正式な英語表記を使用することが求められます。

One of the reasons for the name change is that Osaka University (Ōsaka Daigaku), a long-standing public university in the same prefecture, asked the University of Osaka to reconsider the current English name. The reason is that the name may cause people to confuse the two universities. Osaka University’s official English name is written as “Osaka University,” however it is also sometimes written as “University of Osaka” in academic papers, etc. There was some concern that this would cause confusion.

I often have to look up a company’s English name when translating, however sometimes there is no English name listed on the website. In that case, I am forced to create my own English name to use as the translation.

Since universities include the English spelling of their name in academic papers, I suppose it is necessary to clearly decide the name beforehand, and avoid any names that could be confused with those of other universities.

However, the concern is whether or not third parties will use a university’s official English name. Even if the university’s English name is registered as a trademark, the trademark right does not extend to general use of the name.

It is important to make sure everyone knows the English name. In addition, the general public, including translators, should also use the official English name.
